Abstract

"Theologians have been debating genetic engineering for decades, but what has been missing from many theological debates is a deep concern for persons with genetic disabilities. In this ambitious and stimulating book, Devan Stahl argues that engagement with metaphysics and a theology of nature is crucial for Christians to evaluate both genetic science and the moral use of genetic technologies, such as human genetic engineering, gene therapy, genetic screenings, preimplantation genetic diagnosis, and gene editing. Using theological notions of creation ex nihilo and natural law alongside insights from disability studies, the book seeks to recast the debate concerning genetic well-being. Following the work of Stanley Hauerwas, Stahl proposes the church as the locus for reimagining disability in a way that will significantly influence the debates concerning genetic therapies. Stahl's project in 'genethics' proceeds with an acute awareness of her own liberal Protestant tradition's early embrace of the eugenics movement in the name of scientific and medical advancement, and it constructively engages the Catholic tradition's metaphysical approach to questions in bioethics to surpass limitations to Protestant thinking on natural law. Christianity has all too frequently been complicit in excluding, degrading, and marginalizing people with disabilities, but the new Christian metaphysics developed here by way of disability perspectives provides normative, theological guidance on the use of genetic technologies today. As Stahl shows in her study, only by heeding the voices of people with disabilities can Christians remain faithful to the call to find Christ in "the least of these" and from there draw close to God. This book will be of interest to scholars in Christian ethics, bioethics, moral theology, and practical theology."--

Abstract

In public debates over biotechnology, theologians, philosophers, and political theorists have proposed that biotechnology could have significant implications for human nature. They argue that ethical evaluations of biotechnologies that might affect human nature must take these implications into account. In this book, Gerald McKenny examines these important yet controversial arguments, which have in turn been criticized by many moral philosophers and professional bioethicists. He argues that Christian ethics is, in principle, committed to some version of the claim that human nature has normative status in relation to biotechnology. Showing how both criticisms and defences of this claim have often been facile, he identifies, develops, and critically evaluates three versions of the claim, and contributes a fourth, distinctively Christian version to the debate. Focusing on Christian ethics in conversation with secular ethics, McKenny's book is the first thorough analysis of a controversial contemporary issue.

Abstract

In the immediate future we are likely to witness significant developments in human genetic science. It is therefore of critical importance that Christian ethics engages with the genetics debate, since it affects not just the way we perceive ourselves and the natural world, but also has wider implications for our society. This book considers ethical issues arising out of specific practices in human genetics, including genetic screening, gene patenting, gene therapy, genetic counselling as well as feminist concerns. Genetics and Christian Ethics argues for a particular theo-ethical approach that derives from a modified version of virtue ethics, drawing particularly on a Thomistic understanding of the virtues, especially prudence or practical wisdom and justice. The book demonstrates that a theological voice is highly relevant to contested ethical debates about genetics.

Abstract

"By the last 3 decades, consistent scientific research has proved that the spiritual-religious dimension is strongly related to human health. Since then, this field and its applications are progressively growing and developing, through: psycho-neuro-immunological-endocrine research; curricular disciplines on medical schools; the bio-psycho-social-spiritual approach as standard for patient-centered integrative healthcare; complementary therapies derived from spiritual traditions became valuable allies; hospitals developing policies to respect spiritual values and necessities; faith-based interventions cooperating with psychosocial initiatives. Each of these movements meets the patients' demands for a comprehensive healthcare with a human approach. However, most healthcare professionals were not educated within the view derived from recent research associating religiosity and health. At the other hand, clergymen tend to receive little or none information about health issues during their theological graduation. Notwithstanding progress in including the religious dimension in the clinical context, there are still many significant obstacles for a real transformation. In this context, "An Examination of Religiosity - Influences, Perspectives and Health Implications" aspires to disseminate the ideal form of clinical healthcare, based on the best available scientific evidence. This work does not have the goal of being exhaustive, but rather aims to be a reliable reference to accompany a paradigm shift. The chapters are original manuscripts of high-standard methodological quality, selected among authors from Austria, Brazil, Egypt, Poland, and the United States. The book starts with a historical trajectory and the current state-of-the-art of spirituality-religiosity as a clinical therapeutic resource. The following chapters explore the relationships between spirituality and religiosity in the areas of physical and mental health in many populations and groups: the general population, college students, older adults, cancer patients, and bereaved parents. The final chapters bring intriguing and challenging models about phenomena involving the nonlocal mind and the brain-independent consciousness"--

Abstract

This stimulating and wide-ranging book mounts a profound enquiry into some of the most pressing questions of our age, by examining the relationship between biological science and Christianity. The history of biological discovery is explored from the point of view of a leading philosopher and ethicist. What effect should modern biological theory and practice have on Christian understanding of ethics? How much of that theory and practice should Christians endorse? Can Christians, for example, agree that biological changes are not governed by transcendent values, or that there are no clear or essential boundaries between species? To what extent can 'Nature' set our standards? Professor Clark takes a reasoned look at biological theory since Darwin and argues that an orthodox Christian philosophy is better able to accommodate the truth of such theory than is the sort of progressive, meliorist interpretation of Christian doctrine which is usually offered as the properly 'modern' option.
